Resources for Professional Development

As I mentioned in my last blog, I am shifting from types of professional development for science teachers to looking for references to have on hand in the classroom. This week I found a list of resources that can promote professional development on a daily basis. The national academics organization provides a list of popular and effective resources to have. By clicking on each link you will be taken to a detailed description of each of the resources.

1.The Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM): A Model for Change in Individuals
This book provides teachers with information about the stages of interest in students. The book provides strategies for approaching new curricula. It is noted as the most recommended source for understanding professional development.

2.The Standards for Professional Development for Teachers of Science

The book provides information on how to become more integrated into what goes on in both a classroom and the school. The book emphasizes inquiry based learning for students AND teachers.

3.Principles of Effective Professional Development for Mathematics and Science Education: A Synthesis of Standards
This book has compiled many sources for “high-quality” teacher education.

4.Electronic Journal of Science of Education

This journal provides information on what teachers are reporting as effective or ineffective sources of professional development. The journal also recommends electronic sources that can meet the needs that teachers express.

All of these resources are a great way to inform/help teachers with teaching science. People have been teaching science for many years, however I am new at teaching science; therefore these resources will help a new teacher like myself learn from others who have experience teaching science. They are also great ways to get ideas on what students were the most interested in and what kept them engaged. Also, as educators it is important that we are always up to date on all our facts and know what is currently available, and these resources will help us do just that.

  2. I will graduate with my MST in May and even though I've never had a full time teaching position, I'm always reading and looking for ways to become a better teacher. Seeking out your own professional development is important if you want to become an amazing teacher. I love the idea of subscribing to a journal. This way you know the information is up to date and it's from current teachers in the field. Other technological ways to keep up to date are subscribing to podcasts and participating in webinars.
